When to go?
Flying to Phuket is normally low cost even from Europe or USA. You can get really cheap flights during the summer. The most expensive time is probably over Christmas, but even then you get good prices if you are early with your booking. Phuket has a tropical monsoon climate. It’s warm all your round, but the two periods of April-May and September-October are the hottest. The September-October period is also the wettest. The best time to visit Phuket is during the cool season, from November though to March, when it isn’t so humid, and the cool breezes keep things comfortable. The average temperature is around 75ºF to 89ºF (24ºC to 32ºC).
The hottest time is from April through to May, with temperatures ranging from 80ºF to 95ºF (27ºC to 36ºC). There are short heavy showers, offering welcome relief from the temperature and humidity. The Thai New Year occurs on April 13th and everyone sprinkles (or throws) cool water on each other. No wonder! Locals enjoy June, July and August, since the weather is usually fine and their favourite haunts remain uncrowded. The usual pattern is brief but heavy showers, with plenty of sunshine between downpours. Everything is a little less expensive at this time of year as well. Temperatures range between 70ºF and 90ºF (20ºC to 33ºC) During September and early October, the showers are heavier and more prolonged, but even at this time there are still long intervals of sunshine. The beaches, outdoor restaurants and streets are relatively uncluttered by visitors and there are plenty of low season activities, both water and land-based, during this wettest part of the summer season.
What to do on the island of Phuket?
Jungle-trekking, snorkeling or simply sightseeing? Phuket has a huge range of tours from coach trips to private excursions. Island tours leave daily stopping at places like the National Park, temples and others areas of interest. Some specialize in giving a taste of local island life with stops at rubber and coconut plantations, while others focus on shopping and visiting beauty spots.
If you’d like to go beyond Phuket Island, you can take a day trip to one of the many offshore islands, visit the mainland province of Phang Nga with its amazing limestone scenery, or stay overnight on famous Phi Phi Island.
Phuket offers a great variety of shopping, from bustling open-air village food markets, lively night markets, street stalls and local shops to western style department stores and up-market specialist shops.
Thailand also has a wealth of local crafts – ceramics, textiles, tailor-made clothing and excellent furniture to name a few. If you simply want a few souvenirs or some inexpensive beach or sportswear, the local stalls in Phuket town and the beach resorts have a large selection. If you need the essentials, head for the western style department stores or the new huge supermarkets on the edge of town. For items such as gems and jewellery, there are specialist shops.
